Frequently Asked Questions
FAQ
Answers to common questions about hydroseeding, lawn establishment, site preparation, and what to expect during the process.
1
What is hydroseeding?
Hydroseeding is an environmentally friendly lawn-establishment method where grass seed, mulch, fertilizer, and water are sprayed evenly over prepared soil.
Originally developed in the 1940s for erosion control on highway projects, hydroseeding is now widely used across Canada for new lawns, property restoration, and slope stabilization because it produces fast, even growth at a lower cost than sod.
2
Can I hydroseed on slopes?
Yes. Hydroseeding is highly effective for slopes and erosion control. Specialized mulch blends and tackifiers help hold seed in place while vegetation establishes.
3
I see blue/green stains on my walkways and foundations. Will they fade?
Yes. The dye is temporary and typically fades with sunlight and rain within a few weeks.
4
How does hydroseeding work?
Hydroseeding works by spraying a mixture of water, natural wood or paper mulch, fertilizer, and seeds evenly over bare ground or soil. The slurry creates a protective layer that prevents erosion and retains moisture, helping the seeds germinate quickly and evenly. This creates ideal growing conditions, especially in Nova Scotia where weather can change quickly between rain, wind, and cool temperatures.
5
What is hydroseeding slurry made of?
The exact components of hydroseeding slurry vary depending on whether the goal is lawn restoration, erosion control, new build establishment, or land reclamation, but every mixture includes water, seed, mulch, and fertilizer. It often includes a natural tackifier to help hold the seed in place on sloped ground. Sacred Ground Contracting uses all-natural and eco-friendly ingredients that are safe for pets and children. Our ingredients are selected to maintain soil health while protecting local communities, wildlife, and waterways.
6
Is hydroseeding environmentally friendly?
Yes. Hydroseeding reduces soil erosion, helps retain moisture, and establishes vegetation quickly — all of which help protect Nova Scotia’s soils and nearby water systems. SGC only uses use environmentally responsible products & non-toxic ingredients for our hydroseeding mixtures.
7
Is hydroseeding safe for kids and pets?
We love kids and animals, and we’re careful to choose products that are safe for both. However, we recommend keeping them off hydroseeded surfaces for as long as possible while the grass layer is established. At minimum, keep all foot traffic off hydroseeded surfaces for at least 7-14 days while seeds germinate.
8
Is hydroseeding expensive?
When priced per square foot, hydroseeding is much less expensive than sod and much less labour-intensive than hand seeding.
9
How much maintenance does hydroseeding need?
Hydroseeding requires regular light watering (enough to keep the seed mixture moist, but not enough to form puddles). Exact times will depend on the weather and season. Your Sacred Ground technician will provide instructions if your property requires a specialized approach.
10
How long does hydroseeding take to grow?
The exact timeline varies slightly, but with regular watering, germination usually takes 7-14 days, with lawns well-established in 1-3 months. Cool coastal temperatures may slow growth slightly compared to warmer climates, which is completely normal.
11
What areas are suitable for hydroseeding?
Hydroseeding is adaptable. It’s perfect for seeding lawns even on uneven ground, sowing cover crops or wildflowers, preventing erosion on slopes and embankments, and reclaiming land after mining, construction, or wildfires.
12
Can you hydroseed over an existing lawn or dead grass?
With proper preparation and technique, it's possible to hydroseed over existing vegetation. Your SGC technician will assess your specific situation during our initial site visit.
13
Do you provide instant quotes?
Sacred Ground Contracting takes pride in providing the best hydroseeding solution for your specific needs. Detailed quotes require an on-site visit so that our expert technicians can spot any unique features of your property and adjust our recommendations accordingly. However, you can call/email to receive a rough estimate prior to your site visit.
14
What kind of grass seed do you use?
We use professional-grade seed blends selected for Nova Scotia’s climate and your desired result. Our blends include cool-season grasses that perform well in coastal conditions, cooler springs, and variable rainfall.
15
What kind of fertilizers do you use?
We apply starter fertilizers designed to support early root development and healthy establishment without overloading the soil. It is a professional grade, fully water soluble fertilizer specifically designed for this application.
16
What kind of mulch do you use?
We use high-quality wood or paper fibre mulch that retains moisture, protects seed, reduces erosion, and biodegrades naturally into the soil.
17
Can I choose the kind of grass seed?
Yes. We can recommend grass seed options based on your goals, including low-maintenance lawns, high-traffic areas, drought tolerance, and faster establishment.
18
Do you have a warranty?
Because lawn establishment depends on factors such as weather, watering, soil conditions, and site preparation — many of which are outside of our control — hydroseeding does not typically include a standard warranty. However, Sacred Ground Contracting evaluates each project individually, and follow-up support or solutions may be offered at our discretion in some cases. We provide clear preparation and after-care guidance on every project to help ensure the best possible results.
19
Can you hydroseed in any weather conditions?
No. Hydroseeding requires suitable temperatures and soil conditions. We avoid hydroseeding during heavy rain events, frost conditions, and extreme heat or drought periods. If the weather is unfavourable on the day of your hydroseeding application, we will contact you to reschedule your appointment.
20
Do I need to have a soil test done before hydroseeding?
Not always, but testing can be helpful for poor or previously disturbed soils. We will advise if testing or soil amendments are recommended.
21
What time of year is best for hydroseeding?
The ideal windows for hydroseeding in Nova Scotia are Spring (mid-May to late June) and Fall (late August to early October). These periods offer cooler temperatures and natural moisture that help seed establish successfully.
22
The grass is sprouting, but it’s patchy. Is something wrong?
Usually not. Grass germinates at different speeds, and Nova Scotia weather can affect timing. Lawns typically fill in as growth continues and after the first few mowings. Don’t plan to mow until after the first growth is within 4-6" after initial establishment so as to not kill the newly seeded grass.
23
Does hydroseeding work for large areas?
Yes — hydroseeding is especially cost-effective and efficient for large properties, developments, and acreage.
24
Does hydroseeding work for small patches?
Yes. Hydroseeding can be used for repairs, bare spots, and lawn restoration.
25
Do I need to apply top soil?
While it is not always required depending on your property, quality topsoil can greatly improve results. When needed, we typically recommend 4–6 inches for new lawns to support strong root growth.
26
When should I cut my hydroseeded grass?
Wait to mow until grass reaches at least 4 inches, and preferably 4-6 inches tall. Ensure the ground is dry enough to support mowing equipment.
27
Are there any limitations or downsides to hydroseeding?
Unlike sod, hydroseeding is not an instant transformation. It requires proper watering and patience during establishment. Weather conditions also influence growth timelines.
28
Why is the hydroseeding slurry green?
The green colour comes from a natural dye added to help ensure even application and visibility during spraying. It fades naturally.
